Author's Purpose
Kathryn Stockett was born and raised in Jackson, Mississippi 1969. She would later go to the University of Alabama to receive her undergraduate degree in English and creative writing. Then she headed of to New York to start her career in publishing. After years of publishing magazines and marketing, she picked up her family and moved back south (Kathryn Stockett). After her return she started to focus on her own writing . The book "The Help" took Kathyrn 5 years to write and another 3 to publish. (What's next for 'The Help' author Kathryn Stockett).
Kathryn's book "The Help" was a story based off of a woman from her childhood named Dimitri. Dimitri was an african american maid for the stockett family; in the book her name was Abilene. The story is about Kathryn's close relationship with her maid Dimitri. Kathryn says that she was unaware as a child of the unjust towards the black population. This lead to her hesitation in writing the story because of the criticism she knew it would receive (The maid's tale: Kathryn Stockett examines slavery and racism in America's Deep South).
Kathryn Is most like the character "Eugenia Phelan or Skeeter". In the novel, Skeeter was raised in a southern household with african American maids, in mississippi, then after college she moves back home, focusing on her writing career. Skeeter, like Kathryn, starts to see the injustices the black help face and writes a book about them and the challenges they are forced to deal with daily. Also like Kathryn, Skeeter forms a very close relationship with Dimitri's character Abilene. You can also see a lot of Kathryn and Dimitri's relationship mirrored in Skeeters relationship with her childhood maid Constantine.
